“Who’s
Who” Website Expansion Project
Learning Objective: This project is intended to familiarize you in
more depth with one of the cast of characters being taken up in our class, and
to make the results of each of your efforts available to all others in the
class. Simultaneously, it is designed in a way to build additional materials
into the Science and Modernism web site http://dbeveridge.web.wesleyan.edu/wescourses/2001f/chem160/01/
, which has obvious benefits for all of us. Once again, be concise:
quality instead of quantity, pictures are worth 103 words, but feel
free to write as much as you wish. Note:
Due date: Tuesday
October 2. We ask you to observe some protocols of format, and if you don’t
know how to do these there will be a workshop session on the weekend before the
due date to take you through it. Details to be announced.
Assignment: Each student is
to complete the following for one individual from the Modernist era:
- A
short description telling what the person did during his/her lifetime that
made him/her go down in history. This
should include his/her profession, any major accomplishment (i.e. discovery
or major work), and any big awards.
- A
timeline of the person’s life prepared in a table format with the dates in
the left column and the event in the right column.
It is imperative that you complete this part of the assignment in a
table made in Word for compatibility with the Science and Modernism web
site. An example is enclosed.
- 5-10
pictures from the individual’s life that are not already in the Photo
Gallery on http://dbeveridge.web.wesleyan.edu/wescourses/2001f/chem160/01/photo_gall
ery.htm (You may need to scan in pictures from books if you have trouble
finding more pictures online)
- Links
on the web that have good resources, especially associations that focus on
the individual and sites that have multi-media resources within.
Once again, do not repeat the links that are on the links page of the
course website.
- Most
importantly, please include a complete list of all the sources used to
complete this assignment. This
should be in the following format:
William
Everdell, The First Moderns, University of Chicago Press (1977).
If some information is taken from
other websites, please be sure to include all of the information for the site as
well including the full address; i.e. cite your sources properly.
Additional
Notes: The entire assignment must be handed in on a 3.5 inch IBM-compatible
disc as well as in print. You may work in pairs or groups if you wish, but each
student is responsible for one individual. Please note that the text you provide
through this assignment will directly appear on the website with your byline.
Therefore, it is critical that the information submitted is thorough and
accurate.
