German logician, mathematician, and philosopher who founded Logicism and sought to reduce mathematics to logic.  His writings include "The Foundations of Arithmetic" (1884).

 

Biography

1848 born November 8
1869 entered the University of Jena
1871 transferred to the University of Göttingen
1873 received doctorate in mathematics (Geometry)
1874 earned a habilitation in mathematics at University of Jena
1879 published first major work in logic on concept notation, promoted to ausserordentlicher Professor, married to Margaret Lieseburg sometime after publication (at least tow children died young, later adopted a son, Alfred)
1884 published The Foundations of Arithmetic
1891 published "Function and Concept"
1892 published "On Sense and Reference" and "On Concept and Object"
1893 published The Basic Laws of Arithmetic: Volume 1, his magnum opus
1894 promoted to position of Honorary Ordinary Professor
1896 became ordentlicher Honorary professor, University of Jena
1902 published volume II of Basic Laws of Arithmetic
1903 published "Ont the Foundations of Geometry"
1905 wife died
1906 produced little work until his retirement, "ran out of steam"
1918 retired from the University of Jena, published "The Thought" and "Negation"
1923 published "Compound Thoughts"
1925 died July 26 in Bad Kleinen (now in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern)
