French Impressionist and founder of the 19th-century French school of Neo-Impressionism whose scientific technique for portraying the play of light using tiny, detached strokes of pure color too small to be distinguished when looking at the entire work but making his paintings shimmer with brilliance.  His work "A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte" (1884-1886) is his first piece in the pointillist style and is his most famous work.

1859 born December 2 in Paris
1878 entered the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, the official art school of Paris
1879 sent to military port of Brest
1880 returned to Paris
1883 exhibited his drawing Aman-Jean at the official Salon, began Bathing at Asnieres (first major painting)
1884 Bathing at Asnieres refused by the Salon, founded the Societe des Artistes Independants with contemporaries, Bathing at Asnieres hung at Artistes Independents show (no jury), began Grande Jatte
1885 dots added to Grand Jatte
1886 Sunday Afternoon on the Island of the Grande Jatte completed and exhibited with Impressionist group
1889 moved from Montmartre to Boulevard de Clichy to live with Madeleine Knoblock, a young model
1890 son born
1891 died suddenly in Paris from meningitis on March 29, age 31
