Spanish general who, as captain general of Cuba shortly before the outbreak of the Spanish–American War (1898), used stern antirebel measures that were exploited by U.S. newspapers to inflame public opinion against Spanish rule of Cuba.

Biography

1838 born
1858 became rank of lieutenant
1868 served in the Ten-Year's War in Santo Domingo and Cuba
1873 returned to Spain
1875 fought against the Carlists
1878 made a general and served captain-general (governor) in the Canary Islands until 1883
1888 created Marques de Tenerife and later became captain-general (governor) in the Philippines
1895 given the Grand Cross of Maria Cristina for his command of troops in the Philippines
1896 given the title of Captain-General (governor) of Cuba, replacing Martinez de Campos, in hopes that  in hopes that he could repress the Liberation Army and restore political order in Cuba
1897 relocated more than 300,000 into such "reconcentration camps" and resigned his post to return to Europe
1901 served as Minister of War first time until 1902
1905 served as Minister of War a second time
1906 served as Minister of War a third time until 1907
1909 served as Captain-General of Catalonia and aided in suppressing an anarchist rebellion in Barcelona
1929 celebrated 75 years of military service
1930 died, age 92
